Old village on a rocky plateau, the view alone is worth the ascent

Today it is just a ruined village located in the municipality of Vilaplana, but since ancient times, the Mussara has had a reputation for being a sinister place, a corner of the dark past. The ghost town that remains uninhabited was long ago a rich and stately town that caused the envy of the nearby municipalities. It is believed that the Saracen remains located in the place suggest the existence of a dependent garrison of the Valí de Siurana. This belief is supported by the Arabic toponym that gives the town its name and which can mean flat.

La Mussara, which was part of the county of Prades since its foundation, is mentioned in documents from 1173 where it is stated that the town was already inhabited. The church of the town is named in a bull of Pope Celestino III of 1194. The temple maintained the category of parish until 1534 when it became dependent on that of Vilaplana.

The inhabitants of this town were known as frogs since, when it rained, a small natural reservoir was formed that served to give the animals a drink. A phrase in Catalan also has its origin in this town, baixar de la Mussara (to come down from La Musara), whose meaning is to ignore what everyone knows and which would have its equivalent in Spanish in the phrase to be in the fig tree.

La Mussara (from the Arabic musâra, 'walk, place to walk') is a depopulated area currently added to Vilaplana (Baix Camp). It is located in the Serra de la Mussara, in the Prades mountains, at an altitude of 990 meters, next to the Cingle de les Airasses, from which you can enjoy an impressive view of the south of Camp de Tarragona. The highest part of the term is 1,071 meters above sea level.

In the center of the old town there are eight buildings, all in a dilapidated state, of which the church of Sant Salvador (bell tower from 1859) is somewhat well preserved and, next to it, the house called Cal Cassoles. In the place called les Cinglallons there are seven more houses. On the other hand, in the old part of the town there are seven isolated farmhouses, of which the Mas del Pou del Gel, the best known, and the Mas del Peiró, where Neolithic pottery has been found, stand out. Other remains from the same period have been found in the Susanno forest (a tomb). The old town is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.

When it rains, the water is retained in the small natural reservoir near the village and that is why the local people were called frogs.
