Church of San Clemente (Huidobro)

Parish Church of San Clemente is located in Huidobro (Burgos), located on top of a hill and is within the Natural Park of Hoces del Alto Ebro and Rudrón.
Huidobro is a practically uninhabited town since the copper mines that constituted its main economic support in the 18th and 19th centuries closed in the 20th century. Right now the church is under reconstruction and there are a couple of new houses built on the ruins of the old town.

The temple is of Romanesque origin from the 12th century, of which the beautiful chancel, the portal and a part of the western section of the nave still remain; the rest is due to the remodeling carried out at the beginning of the 16th century. Its decorative style of Burgos Romanesque.
The apse has a double line of taqueado. The portal is truly remarkable, late Gothic, with semicircular arches, with four carved archivolts with ornamental motifs and supported on equally decorated capitals. The apse is divided into three streets by two semi-columns. In the central segment there is a flared window with checkered overalls and two archivolts, a style that is repeated in other windows. The excellent sculptural work of the master stonemasons stands out in capitals and corbels, which represent sirens, griffins, harpies, male heads...
Of the interior furniture, only a polychrome wooden altarpiece and the effigy of Pope Clemente in the central encasement are preserved. It was transferred to the Burgos Altarpiece Museum
