These concrete bunkers were built during the German occupation of Greece to protect the strategically important canal and the associated bridge from Allied attacks or acts of sabotage.
Originally, machine guns or artillery were positioned there.
The striking, almost floating appearance resulted from massive soil erosion and landslides on the steep canal walls.
The ruins are now a popular destination for hikers and "Dark Tourism" enthusiasts.
Due to their location directly on the precipitous cliffs, some of these structures are considered to be at risk of collapse.
