    Tips

It was probably 300 years ago, during the baroque heyday of pilgrimages. From the lowlands - that is, up from the Inn valley - many pilgrims went to Birkenstein in the Leitzach valley to see the miraculous image of grace. The pilgrims' path led over the Auerberg. After the steep, sweaty ascent - there were at least 400 meters of altitude to overcome - the pilgrims were tired, hungry and thirsty. The more or less devout journeymen asked and did not hesitate and helped themselves in the fields of the farmers - and stole everything edible: apples, plums and beets. The farmer von Schnitzenbaum was so angry at this thievery that he lay in wait and caught one of the pilgrims in flagranti. The guy had just dug three turnips out of his field. Then “Scheriff Schnitzenbaumer” stepped into action. A scene as you know it from western epics. The well-built farmer grabbed the turnip thief. Then he looped a rope around a thick branch of the field linden, put the culprit's head in the noose - and hung it. The lifeless body dangled from the branch. And you can literally hear the accordion playing the song of death. At that time people were brutal and brutal, but also religious. As a punishment for his bloody act committed “in affect”, Schnitzenbaumer had to reach for the trowel - in order to atone for his sinful actions. So much for the legend of the thieving pilgrim and the lynching peasant. Whether this Wild West Schmonzette corresponds to the truth, however, seems questionable. It is certain that the simple chapel near the Schnitzenbaumer Hof was built in 1707 and consecrated to St. Koloman.

Bauer Schnitzenbaumer caught a pilgrim in 1607, when he was starving his hunger with the farmer's beets. Then Wolf Schnitzenbaumer hung the pilgrim.

As penance, he had to build the chapel.

Worth seeing are also the other Hofkirchen, which are here in the area.

The Schnitzenbaumer Chapel is on the Hofkapellenweg. The vigilante justice is probably a legend.
