The Schleseburg barrage is also located in a loop of the Weser. The weir system has the task of damming up the Weser water for shipping to a depth of 2.80 metres. There is a hydroelectric power station in the weir. From Müsleringen to Schlüsselburg, a 3.5 km lock canal running parallel and west of the Weser shortens the “Weser waterway”. In the lock in Schlüsselburg, the difference in height of the water dammed up in front of the weir is overcome by lowering and raising the water level. The Schleusen Canal flows back into the Weser between Schlisselburg and Stolzenau. The often monotonous view of the canal often turns out to be more diverse under water than it appears. The same fish species can be found in the lock canal as in the Weser. The following fish are caught there:
Eel, ide, brown trout, perch, bream, chub, goby, white bream, dace, pike, carp, ruff, asp, rainbow trout, roach, rudd, tench, catfish, vitreous and zander.
