The "Casa Torre" (towers) were derived from the defensive towers of the country castles and preceded the palace as an urban family seat. Here the rooms are arranged one above the other and connected by ladders. Even the high entrances can only be reached via a movable staircase. The height of the towers was limited in the 12th century for reasons of public safety to 54 meters (100 Tuscan yards).
After the Great Plague of 1348, which drastically reduced the population, San Gimignano was placed under the protection of the Florentines. Thus the place was deprived of its economic base and political sovereignty and plunged into insignificance. Of the once 72 towers, most were demolished, others fell victim to the battles of World War II. Today, there are only 15 gender towers in the historically preserved city.

Piazza della Cisterna, the heart of the medieval city, was named after the travertine fountain, inaugurated in 1237. It is surrounded by numerous towers and palaces.
Cisterns are next to wells the oldest technical system of water supply. They served in the high-altitude cities far away of the river courses as a water reservoir.
