The first reliable mention was in 1170. The original complex was built by the royal ministerial Werner from Kerpen, who had received the Echtz farm and the surrounding land as a fief from Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa in the 12th century. He had a seat laid out on a clearing where today's moated castle is located. This gave him and the place its name. Today's name Merode derives from the Latin "de Rode" and the Middle High German "van dem Rode" or "van me Rode".

Merode Castle is one of the most impressive mansions in the region and is actually still owned by the Princes of Merode.
Originally a two-part moated castle, the castle's beautiful Renaissance architecture dates back to Field Marshal Johann Philipp Eugen, Imperial Count of Merode and Marquis of Westerloo (1674-1732).

In November 1944 Allied bombers destroyed large parts of the facility. Reconstruction began shortly after the end of the war, only the north-west tower and parts of the north wing remained destroyed. The work lasted until the 1990s. In 2000, Merode Castle was again badly damaged by a fire. The restoration work is ongoing. The palace has been partially accessible again since 2009.

Open-air events regularly take place in the romantically beautiful castle park, including opera evenings, British lifestyle events and the popular Christmas market. The castle itself is privately owned and only open to the public for certain events (indeland-erleben.de/urlaubszielen/schloss-merode).
