    Rieden Calvary Chapel

The chapel was built in 1776 on the initiative and under the guidance of the shoemaker Konrad Schweiger from Rieden. At the same time, three crosses were set up with Jesus Christ in the middle, the two thieves (criminals) to the left and right of them, and images of the Mother of God, St. John and Mary Magdalene.
As a result of secularization, the chapel was vandalized in 1808. In 1823 the old chapel was rebuilt under the supervision of master potter Philipp Wolf.
It is not known since when the Way of the Cross has led to the Schloßberg. The 14 Stations of the Cross, which were donated by an unknown benefactor in December 1823, were initially made of wood.
The Kopf family, who emigrated to America in 1854, wrote to Pastor Weiß von Rieden in 1884 that they wanted to have a Way of the Cross built on Calvary. The priest sent plans and cost estimates to America and received 4,500 marks from the Kopf siblings. The Way of the Cross was built. (Research has shown that the stones were quarried from the northwest flank of the so-called “Head Rock” by workers from Rieden.) The station images were cast and set by an ironworks in Lohr am Main. The work was completed in 1890.
In May, Prior Father Otto Kopf, who was ordained in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, came from America with two of his sisters and consecrated the Stations of the Cross on Sunday, May 22, 1891. In September of the same year, the Kopf siblings returned to America.
