Landgrave Wilhelm IV of Hesse had the stately building built from 1550 to 1557 as a hunting lodge for his father Philip the Magnanimous. Nothing remains of the previous fortified building from the 12th century. Today, the simple three-storey castle with the protruding rectangular risalit for the spiral staircase houses the tax office. At right angles to this, the two-storey royal stables built in 1577 are the seat of the district court. Both buildings are connected by a two-storey covered passage. Gates lead to the lateral forecourt of the former residential building, then to the adjoining farmyard and on to the palace park.
