Originally, Tranekær Castle was a heavily fortified castle with a moat and drawbridge, dating back to the 13th century. The current form is due to Landgrave Ahlefeldt-Laurvig, who had the manorial complex extensively renovated between 1859 and 1865. Around 1950, the castle received its striking façade, painted in English red. A visit is only possible on a few fixed dates in the year. You can stop off at the “Generalen” restaurant directly below the castle.

Tranekær Castle is the oldest inhabited house in Denmark and stands out from the beautiful landscape with its location and its beautiful red color.
Originally built as a heavily fortified castle with a moat and drawbridge, the castle enjoys an extremely favorable location. Isolated and built on a 20-meter-high shore, it used to be possible to sail from both the east and west sides of Langeland to the foot of the castle. When traveling on Langeland, one had to pass by the castle.

The castle is located on one of the island's many "hat hills." In this way,
the site offered the castle's inhabitants considerable protection from the very beginning.

With the construction of moats and a ring wall, the castle became a virtually impregnable fortress over time.

Tranekær Castle is inhabited by the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family and is now
a modern agricultural and forestry business with an area of 1,733 hectares. The main building and the castle grounds are not open to the public,
but outside the moats, you can stroll along a beautiful path,
where you can see unique trees in the park, including the rare Chinese conifer, the water fir.

Access to the castle is possible as part of a guided tour, during which the history of the castle and the family is told with wonderful anecdotes.
