A monument marks the beginning of this great dedicated, smooth bike trail along the waterfront, connecting to La Playa and Kellogg's Beach. Recognized as the oldest commercial trail in the Western United States, a trail on what is now Rosecrans Street used to connect Point Loma to the San Diego Mission, and was in use during the Pre-Hispanic (Native American), Spanish, Mexican and American periods of San Diego history.

The La Playa Trail (or Bessemer Path) has been recognized as the oldest commercial trail in the Western United States. The trail was used by Native Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans, and early American inhabitants of San Diego. Much of the length of the original trail makes what is now Rosecrans Street and Friars Rd. This trail used to connect Point Loma to the San Diego Mission over 10 miles away.
