The name of the parish, in the form Saint Germain de Focherville and its variants, occurs between 1150 and 1186. The current name of Saint Germain sur Ay only appears in 1190. Around 1150, Richard de La Haye du Puits founded in Saint Germain sur Ay a priory which he placed under the obedience of the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel by attaching to it the income of the fief of Fourqueville.
