The village of Burgau's beach marks the western boundary of the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park. The sands stretch along a small bay, sheltered from inclement weather, and which serves as a fishing port. Burgau, a fishing village in Budens, municipality of Vila do Bispo, owes its name to the abundance of whelks, a gastropod mollusc, locally known as burgau or burrié, on its shores.
