The town church of St. Marien was built on the foundations of the monastery church that burned down in 1608, on which the Cistercian nuns had sunk in prayer for almost 300 years from 1240 to 1525. A special detail adorns the church tower built in 1727 - at the request of Duke Ernst August, a deer adorns the top of the tower as a symbol of his favorite hunting ground. In return, in 1817 the people of Berka put a cross on their town hall.
