This Maria Park with the Lourdes Grotto has been a well-known pilgrimage site in Belgium and the Netherlands since 1895. The apparition of Mary in Lourdes (France) in 1858 also initiated an unseen Marian devotion in Meersel-Dreef. The Capuchins liked to capitalize on this and 'Our Lady of Lourdes in Meersel-Dreef became the hub of devotion at the border. The forest opposite the monastery, which initially served as a monastery garden, was given a new purpose as a devotional park. The park contains a Lourdes Grotto, Stations of the Cross and other statues of saints. A fine example of 'rich Roman life'.
