Before the renovation between 1983 and 2001, the mixed needle and rise dam was the last of its kind in operation in Belgium. The decision to renovate it was a simple matter of safety, manual dams being complex and dangerous in terms of their age. Thus, the nine dams built between 1868 and 1880 have all been modernized, replaced by electromechanical structures and equipped with segment gates with supers.
The lock has been completely renovated but has retained its original appearance.
