According to tradition, the house is the former "Wolfsberg Castle", the birthplace of the poet Wirnt von Gravenberc, but there is no evidence of this. It was owned by Nuremberg patrician families in the 16th century and was built in its present form in 1567 after the great city fire that destroyed it.

The painting on the house on the south side of the square was created by the painter Georg Prell from Hiltpoltstein in 1927 and Gerd Backer from Gräfenberg renewed it in 1985. The painting shows a battle scene from the Middle High German epic "Wigalois, the knight with the wheel", which Wirnt was the offspring of the Gräfenberg family von Gravenberc, a contemporary of Wolfram von Eschenbach, wrote around 1200.
