Until 1708 it was owned by the Nuremberg district administration office and housed the city servant's apartment. At times it was also used as a prison. From 1810 onwards the building was privately owned.

The Gesteiger Tor was taken over by the Old Town Friends in 2008 and restored by themselves and preserved in its original state, taking into account the monument protection. Until the renovation of the Kräußelhaus, the Gesteiger Tor was also home to the Ritter-Wirnt Museum, the Old Town Friends' meeting room and the association's archive. These have now moved to the larger premises of the Kräußelhaus.

In the past it was also known to the city as the Nuremberg Gate, Untertor or Taltor.
