The enormous boulder of Rottum near Heerenveen has a size of 4.70 meters long, 3.10 meters wide and 2.00 meters thick and weighs 44,200 kilograms (44 tons). As far as we know, this is the largest boulder in the Netherlands!

Originally, the boulder was much larger. According to the stories, it was originally four times as big, with a probable length of 6.25 meters, width 3.50 meters and thickness 4.00 meters. The weight must have been about 150,000 kilos (150 tons) at the time. Until about the year 1850 it was still a meter above ground level. With gunpowder, a skipper made three quarters of the stone jump and sold it. The debris was used for a sea wall at Lemmer.
