The hermitage was built in 1606 with two large rooms; one the church itself and the other the old hostelry. Inside, the main altarpiece stands out, presided over by the image of Our Lady of Hontanares. The hermitage occupies the place where the church of the village of Hontanares previously existed, now disappeared.

The hermitage of the Virgen de Hontanares is a mountain sanctuary from the beginning of the 17th century. The place is a center for pilgrimages and popular devotion, it has benches, a fountain, a seasonal bar and magnificent forests and mountains for family walks or daring mountain excursions in the Sierra de Ayllón. At the end of the road that passes through the sanctuary is the Piedras Llanas viewpoint, a good point of view of the Land of Ayllón.
