Passing from Phoenician counter to international port, Essaouira the city of the trade winds knew, and still knows, many names and nicknames. Amougdoul his first name would have been transcribed by the Portuguese by Mogdouro then Mogador in French, which was also baptized a famous Parisian theater. Its current name Essaouira comes from the Arabic sour which means wall. Indeed the city although turned towards the outside and the sea is protected by walls.

The founding Sultan of the city Mohamed Ben Abdellah would have been right in saying that: "Whoever enters this city, poor, leaves it prosperous. Because in this city, wealth comes from distant horizons."
