The historic Waldschänke, the founding place of the garden city of Hellerau and hostel of important artists of the European avant-garde, such as Franz Kafka, Gerhart Hauptmann, Oskar Kokoschka and others forms the demanding background of the Hellerau community center.
Under the leadership of the Förderverein Waldschänke Hellerau e.V., the Waldschänke was saved from deterioration and was able to be rebuilt with many voluntary helpers and funding.
