It is not exactly known who built the mill. "In 1754 the wind miller Gottfried Wittig was mentioned. For the year 1844 Johann August Schmidt is named as the owner." The mill is over 226 years old and has been owned by the Schmidt family for six generations. In 1985 the city of Brehna acquired the so-called “Schmidt Mill”. After the death of Walter Schmidt, the last owner, no successor was found. In 1986 the mill was restored by the city. The Brehna city council then decided to set up a mill museum and a café. Although, according to tradition, chairs and tables had already been purchased, the Brehna city council withdrew the building permit from the Bitterfeld State Building Inspectorate in 1989.In 1998 a storm destroyed a wing of the mill. Due to the rotten wood, all the wings had to be removed in 1999. In July 2010, new wings were attached to the historic post mill. From then on, the “Schmidt Mill” appeared complete again.
