Fort Ruigenhoek has a very special location: on an uninhabited island in the middle of old trees and shrubs in the Gagelbossen.
Built between 1869 and 1870, the fort served as a defense for the access via the Ruigenhoeksedijk and the quay between inundation basins. The bomb-proof barracks with 'storm stairs' is striking. Staatsbosbeheer became the owner of the fort in 1997.translated by
