In Moltrasio, 17 quarries were in operation, including the “Cava del Niasc”.
The opening operation of the quarry was defined by several phases: the excavation, the extraction of the rock in blocks or slabs and the processing entrusted to the stonemasons (called "picapreda"). The stone was then transported downstream on heavy wooden sleds called "carei" (trolleys) which slid along steep stone roads specially made. Among the uses of Moltrasio stone, the following were frequent: walls, internal and external flooring, roof coverings, curbs, slabs for balconies and table tops, stairs.
