Korenmolen De Zwaluw is a so-called tower mill. This type of windmill is usually located in a town or village, as the windmill has to protrude above the roofs of the surrounding houses to catch the wind. The height of the mill, including the blades, is 35 meters. The mill has four attics; the barn attic, the grinding attic, the stone attic and above that the roof or lubricating attic. If you stand on the scaffolding or orbit and look out over Hoogeveen, you are at a height of approximately 10 metres. When the mill is running with four full sails, it has a windage of 120 square meters. The length of the rods (wings) is 24.60 m. When the fledged, the four vanes, makes a revolution, the millstones turn six times.
According to old data, Hoogeveen already had a mill on the Molendijk, the current Schutstraat, in the middle of the 17th century. Because the population of Hoogeveen continued to grow, a larger mill was soon needed for flour production. This mill was built in 1787 by Roelof Steenbergen of Ten Arlo on the Krakeel, where the Van Echtenstraat is now located. On the west side of the current mill there is a plaque that reminds of this. This mill served as a corn, peeling and run (bark) mill. In 1826 the mill passed into the hands of Lucas Quirinus Robaard. In 1833 the mill burned down due to a fire in the miller's house. A year later in 1834 the mill was rebuilt. The current mill.

Nowadays they are mostly just monuments to a long tradition of craftsmanship, but sometimes they are still in use: the heavy millstones were moved using only the power of the wind to drive them, for example to grind grain into flour (grain mills) or to press oil from olives (oil mills). Sometimes the windmills also had the function of a pumping station and transported water to a higher level to drain a swampy area.
