The pollarded willow is not a tree species of its own, but it is unique. With its thick, gnarled trunk and bushy crown, it is popular as an avenue and garden tree. It requires little space and is a raw material for a wide variety of crafts. A real all-rounder! Unfortunately, it is becoming rarer in the native landscapes. A millennia-old tradition is in danger of disappearing.

The history of these trees goes back to the time around the birth of Christ. At that time, people were dependent on renewable raw materials from their surroundings. The faster these grew back and the more diversely they could be used, the better. Characteristics that the pasture brings with it by nature. Their flexible branches can be made into woven baskets or fences, and the soft wood makes good fuel. In addition, the rods are suitable for animal feeding and can be used as litter in the stable when chopped up.Source: baumpflegeportal.de/aktuell/kulturgut-kopfweide-tradition-craft

Here in Streufdorf, the cycle path leads over the Keltenpanoramaweg, which is beautifully planted with small willows on the right and left. This gives a special flair because you don't see it that often.
