Construction of the Grote Kerk started in 1652. Things did not go well: when the church was completed in 1658, there were still so many defects that the church was not in reasonable condition until 1697. The church had the shape of a Greek cross with four equal arms with a tower in the middle, without bells.

The number of churchgoers grew steadily along with Hoogeveen and soon the church became too small. In 1766, the west wing of the church was considerably enlarged, up to the current west facade. This created a Latin cross, with three equal arms and one long arm. A new turret was placed on the new wing, still without bells.

In 1801 and 1804 the Grote Kerk was enlarged for the second and third time. The church took its current form, a three-aisled hall church. A bell tower was first placed in 1806 on the spot where it still stands today.

In the nineteenth century, several additions were made to the outside of the church, which were later demolished. This concerns a vestibule from 1821 on the west facade and a vestry from 1881 on the east facade.

The Grote Kerk was extensively restored for the last time from April 15, 1967 to September 7, 1969. The interior in particular underwent a transformation, giving the church its current open appearance.
