Aarhus Ø is a developing urban area in Aarhus that will be built on the former container port in the northern part of the port. Apartments for 10,000-12,000 people and 10,000 jobs are to be built on a total floor area of 800,000 m2.
In the second quarter of 2012, the population was only 5 people. On October 1, 2019, the population had risen to 3,940.
Aarhus Ø will be a unique district as Aarhus Municipality has decided that 25% of all housing must be social housing that can be paid for with normal wage income.
The first construction work started in 2007 when the Municipality of Aarhus started raising the piers so that they could withstand higher water levels. The mouths of the canals are built in the same way. The area will consist of several islands connected by bridges.
Today (2022) a number of buildings have been completed, but at the same time the area is characterized by many large construction sites.
