The church and the town of Gnissau, called Gneshowe or Gnessow in old documents up to 1283, were first mentioned in a document in 1198. The church is also listed in the confirmation document of Pope Innocent III. for the possessions of the Augustinian monastery in Segeberg, to which the church and its ecclesiastical jurisdiction belonged until the time of the Reformation. The first church may have been built in Wendendorf before 1198. It was just a chapel perched on a hill. The second church already stood on the present site.
Planning for the new church building began under the direction of Pastor Berlage, who came to Gnissau in 1878. In October 1883, today's church, a neo-Romanesque brick building, was inaugurated.
