The church and the place Gnissau, in the old documents called Gneshowe or Gnessow until 1283, were first mentioned in 1198.
The church is listed in the certificate of confirmation of Pope Innocent III. for the possessions of the Augustinian monastery in Segeberg, to which the church and the spiritual jurisdiction belonged until the Reformation.
The first church in Wendendorfe must have been built before 1198. It was just a chapel on a hill. The second church was already on the current square.
In 1599 the old church was partially renovated; the church tower stopped and a choir was added later.
Since this old church could no longer be renovated, it turned out from around 1870 that a new building was necessary. Under the direction of Pastor Berlage, who came to Gnissau in 1878, the planning for the new church began.
In October 1883, today's church, a neo-Roman brick building, was inaugurated.
