The hedgerows that can be found in the area run like a line through the landscape and date from medieval traditional agriculture and had multiple functions. Delimitation of the property line, livestock barrier so that cattle did not run away and supplier of wood for various purposes.
Wood was usually used and stacked to create a natural 'fence' through which cattle could not walk. The wood could also later be used for, among other things, heating and making tools. Nowadays we have barbed and electric fences to keep cattle back and to demarcate the border, and hedgerows are seen more as having an ecological significance. The hedgerows now function as habitat for plants and animals. They also form a connecting zone between separate nature reserves.
