The hooded ladies are certainly one of the most poetic names given to this unique geological phenomenon. They are also called fairy chimneys. In English they are called Hoodoos. This rather fascinating geological phenomenon is relatively easily explained.

They are made of crumbly rocks, protected or capped by a more solid rock. Erosion thus does not take place below the stone and forms over thousands of years a colonnade under the protective stone.

In the USA we find some of these Hoodoos topped with a fossil, as in Oregon, a sabre-toothed tiger's head instead of a simple stone.
