For a short time, the city of Giessen was the only city in Europe to be protected by this new type of anti-missile shield.
The area was cleared at the end of the Cold War. The missile site fell into disrepair.
In 2000 and 2001, buildings and bunkers were blown up for practice purposes, the roads were unsealed and the site was renatured.
