On January 11, 1944, an Allied aircraft over Noord-Sleen ran into trouble.
After all other crew members had jumped out of the plane, the pilot Tom White managed to maneuver the plane in such a way that it did not crash on the village but just north of it in the Sleenerzand forestry.
That spot is behind the monument.
The monument was unveiled by Tom White himself on May 5, 1990.
