The church is located on a spur above the carriage road that runs along the lakefront: the latter was built in the 1930s - before then, to go from Oria to San Mamete, one had to cross the lower Albogasio, go up the hill of the church, descending on the other side along a 120-step mule track, called “la Calcinera”.

The southern external side of the church, overlooking the lake, clearly bears seven coats of arms of as many Milanese bishops who visited Valsolda, an episcopal fief from the Middle Ages to the Napoleonic era.

The building was built in stages between the second half of the 1500s and the first half of the 1600s. The interior decoration was practically redone in 1918.

The impression that the interior gives is that of a feast of shapes and colors. In the overall sculptural and pictorial decoration, the work of local artists, the many delightful figures of Angels and especially cherubs stand out, represented in the most varied and mischievous attitudes. The illusionistic effect of the fake architectures that frame the frescoes in the side chapels is also beautiful.
