1283 is mentioned as the probable builder of the castle Ludwig de Forest, and in the 14th century the lords of Gleimenhain were the owners. In 1478 the castle was already desolate and went to Hans von Dörnberg. The castle continued to deteriorate, and in 1563 an agreement was reached with the Electorate of Mainz that it would not be rebuilt.
