Westheim Bog Oak

Bog oak is oak wood that has rested airtight under sand and mud for thousands of years. As a result, it takes on a dark color. Only after centuries of exposure to the humic acid in the absence of air does the wood acquire a beautiful, rich, deep brown or even black hue.
The bog oak in Westheim has not been conserved in the bog, but under a layer of sand in dunes in an airtight environment.
The exact age has not yet been determined, according to experts it should be between 3000 and 5000 years. The color is relatively light because it was under sand.
The Westheim bog oak was salvaged in the summer of 2006 during excavation work in the Westheim sand pit, Kahler Grund section.
