Großerkmannsdorf is a district of the large district town of Radeberg in the Bautzen district of Saxony, located on the southern edge of the town. It borders the Dresdner Heide (Dresden Heath), the Karswald (Kars Forest), and the Schönfelder Hochland (Schönfeld Upland). The Goldbach stream flows through the town, later flowing into the Große Röder (Greater Röder). ### History
The first documented mention of Großerkmannsdorf dates back to 1353 under the name "Erkenbrechtesdorf." The current name developed over several centuries. During the Thirty Years' War, the village was repeatedly plundered and partially burned down. The present church was built in 1702 and completed in 1721 with the construction of the church tower.
### Infrastructure and Transportation
Großerkmannsdorf is connected to Radeberg and Dresden by State Road 181. Federal Highway 6 runs along the southern edge of the municipality. Since December 2008, State Road 177 has served as a bypass around the town. Bus lines connect Großerkmannsdorf with Dresden, Radeberg, and surrounding communities.
### Community and Culture
The town has a lively club life. The Großerkmannsdorf Local History Association operates a local history room and organizes events such as the Open Monument Day. The Großerkmannsdorf Carnival Club 1967 is known for its carnival events. The volunteer fire department has existed since 1900, and the Großerkmannsdorf Brass Band, which originated from a fire department band, was founded in 1961.
