This is the place to get a permit for biking through the vast Camp Pendleton military area that blocks the entire section of coastline north of here. Unfortunately this is only on the south side. If biking in from the North the only option is probably biking along the freeway shoulder, unless there's time for pre-registration weeks in advance: urbanbicycleoutfitters.com/2016-pre-registration-required-to-ride-through-camp-pendleton

Apply for your Department of Defense bicycle pass at the Visitors Building, Main Gate, in Oceanside. To assure the safety of US Marine Base bicyclists using Stuart Mesa Road as an alternative to the I-5 freeway shoulder must now posses a valid Department of Defense Biometric Identification Card.

Otherwise the only current connection between San Clemente and Oceanside is the I-5 freeway shoulder, open in both directions between the Las Pulgas Road on-ramp and Harbor Drive ramps in Oceanside.

The I-5 freeway shoulder has been open to bicyclists between Las Pulgas and Harbor Dr. for decades. Signs will direct you through the rest areas and at the Harbor Dr. exit in Oceanside. If construction closes the I-5 shoulders, Signs will offer you a phone number to call to shuttle you and your bicycle!

If Marines close the south SanOnofre St. Park gate, Caltrans should post signs with access to the I-5 shoulder from Christianitos or Basilone Rd.
