On September 17, 1944, a satellite camp of the Neuengamme concentration camp was set up in Wilhelmshaven on Alter Banter Weg. The more than 1,000 male prisoners who had been selected in the main camp had to do hard labor for the Kriegsmarine shipyard and to do clean-up work. Some barracks in a forced labor camp had previously been fenced off with barbed wire and surrounded by watchtowers.

234 dead were registered in the death book of the Neuengamme concentration camp for the subcamp in Wilhelmshaven. The actual number of dead is probably larger and is estimated at 700.
