The monument to Columbus was placed in the Arsenal in 1882 by order of the Secretary of the Navy, Francisco de Paula Pavia. Spanish sculptor Juan Sanmartin y Serra made it in Carrara marble in the city of Genoa. In 1900, the statue was ceded to the municipality, but it was not placed until the urbanization of the Muralla del Mar. The pedestal was designed by the architect Lorenzo Ros in 1920. The statue depicts Columbus with his outstretched arm pointing towards the land, which is the most common iconography of the sailor in statues.
