The building dates back to the 16th century and was built by D. Pedro II, who ensured that construction continued into the next century.
This fortress protected the mouth of the Cávado until the French invasions (19th century).
Currently you can also see the Esposende lighthouse, located in the fort.
It consists of a 15 meter high, cylindrical red iron tower sitting on a concrete base and capped at the top by a flare with a range of 20 nautical miles.
