The lion fountain was erected in 1837 in front of the southern facade of Glienicke Castle - next to a thousand-year-old linden tree. Schinkel was originally planning a terrace to visually emphasize the facade, but Prince Karl, the owner of the palace, wanted the plans to be changed and a fountain to be installed. Schinkel based his design on a model from the Villa Medici in Rome. The result is a round water basin with a fountain, flanked on the left and right by two elevated platforms on which gilded lion sculptures spew water. The original of the fountain is unfortunately lost many years later - now a metal copy is set up on the castle grounds. In 1942 a tree standing next to the fountain fell on one of the golden lions, which was completely shattered. Only twenty-five years later, in the course of restoration work on the entire park, was it possible to replace the lion figure.
