The Pinakothek (today: Alte Pinakothek) commissioned by King Ludwig I was opened in 1836 and was the largest museum building in the world when it opened! The architect Leo von Klenze created a groundbreaking museum building that, with its series of large halls illuminated by skylights and the accompanying cabinets on the north side, also became a model for other museum buildings. Severely destroyed in World War II, the Alte Pinakothek was able to be rebuilt by 1957. Missing parts of the facade were not simply reconstructed, but replaced with unplastered brickwork and thus remained recognizable as "wounds". These characterize the long facades of the building even for the casual observer. The extensive green areas around the building are decorated with sculptures by various artists, but are also often used by students from the nearby Munich universities to linger.
