This small shrine does not have its name and patronage after one of the many people who are venerated as saints. The French name "Notre-Dame"
LORETO is an internationally known Marian pilgrimage site in central Italy, Marche region. However, the place did not become famous because of apparitions of the Mother of God, like "Lourdes" (1858) in the French Pyrenees or "Fatima" (1917) in Portugal.
The tradition of Marian veneration in Loreto goes back much further: a building that is considered to be the childhood home of Mary in Nazareth has been venerated there since the end of the 13th century. According to legend, angels brought the so-called "SANTA CASA" from Israel - with a few stops along the way - here.
