The view from the ruins of Altenahr and Mayschoß, where the Ahr meanders wildly romantically in narrow bends through rock formations and steep vineyards that are terraced with dry stone walls, is magnificent. The Mediterranean climate and the slate soil create optimum conditions for the ripening of the predominantly blue grapes. The wine route is a must to walk once in your life.

Are Castle offers beautiful views of Altenahr and the Ahr Valley. The castle ruins are located 240 meters above sea level above Altenahr.
The castle stands on the craggy peak of a mountain with steep eastern and southern slopes. The ancestral seat of the Counts of Are, it was built by Theodoric of Are in the first half of the 12th century. It came under the Electorate of Cologne in the 13th century and underwent numerous expansions in the 14th and 15th centuries.
