"In the Ruhr area, numerous colliery names are reminiscent of Prussian history in the industrial age, including Zollverein in Essen, Zollern in Dortmund or Frederick the Great in Herne. The Auguste Victoria colliery in Marl gained public attention when it closed operations in 2015 - as the second-to-last German hard coal mine It was named after the last German empress, the wife of Wilhelm II. After the mine was finally closed, a bronze sculpture of the monarch was ceremoniously transferred from the mine site to the pedestrian zone in Marl-Hüls.
