The town of Cagli rises in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, on a plateau narrow by the rivers Bosso and Burano, confluent of the Metauro. The territory is surrounded by the Catria, Petrano, Nerone and Paganuccio mountains which, with the Pietralata, form the steep limestone walls of the Passo del Furlo massif.

Of Roman origin, Cagli, after various events, was rebuilt on the plateau below Mount Petrano, incorporating the pre-existing religious and civil buildings that made up the village. The extraordinary urban project attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio was based on wide streets organized according to an orthogonal grid. The famous Ideal City, attributed to Luciano Laurana on a design by Leon Battista Alberti, presents in the background a landscape element with a profile so characterized that it does not seem imaginary but decidedly real since it matches the plateau of Monte Petrano at the foot of which it is still today Cagli with its square.
