The Dreamtime Cultural Centre in Rockhampton is a celebration of the Karingbal and Bidjara peoples, the traditional custodians of Central Queensland's Sandstone Belt.
For thousands of years the Karingbal and Bidjara occupied this region of caves, gorges, cliffs, and crystal blue watering holes -- a beautiful oasis in the middle of brigalow stands and arid desert. They painted their stories and recorded events from their communities, such as births and deaths, onto rock surfaces, leaving behind the oldest-known examples of stencil art in the world at Carnarvon Gorge.
At the Dreamtime Cultural Centre, the stories of the Karingbal and Bidjara live on in didgeridoo song, traditional dances, and interpretive displays. The Dreamtime refers to the mythical period before humans, when gods roamed the earth, creating places and landmarks that remain sacred to the Aboriginal people.
The Centre also features extensive exhibits on the Torres Strait Islanders of far-northern Queensland.
